Delilah's heart sank even lower. She didn't have the extra money and couldn't bear the thought of letting Ethan down yet again. She took a deep breath and picked up the phone.

Delilah: Sure thing, bud. I'll figure it out.

As soon as the message was sent, she knew she had no idea how to come up with the money. Every credit card was maxed out. Even though she’d recently picked up the part-time job at The Citadel, which brought in more money, it was still entirely too little to make a dent in the debt she’d incurred.

Being an adult sucked. Being a single parent sucked. She wished she could close her eyes, wave a magic wand, and make it all go away. The closest she got to it was when she escaped to her little headspace.

She loved being a little. When she didn’t have to think about her adult responsibilities and could slip into a playful mindset. What she wouldn’t give to be there right now, grab her polar bear and color a picture. Crawl up into her daddy’s lap and snuggle against his strong chest and scratchy beard.

Daddy.

Her heart called out for Tank. She didn’t deserve such a loving, attentive, and sexy Daddy. He might think she was attractive, something she couldn’t figure out, but if he found out about all this debt? How she was a loser high school dropout? Not only did he serve his country and spend many years overseas in combat, he’d earned his college diploma while doing so. After retiring, he’d finished his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and now owned his own successful practice.

She rested her head in her arms and sobbed, feeling very much like a failure. What did she have to offer a man like Tank or a kid like Ethan? They deserved much more than what she could provide.

Meeting and developing a relationship with Tank was great. The thought of losing her boyfriend and Daddy Dom was almost too much to bear. She’d finally had a healthy relationship with a man she trusted. He was the one person who made her feel safe and cherished. She couldn't risk losing him because of her financial troubles.

When would she get a chance to live without worrying about the other shoe dropping? Finances? The senator’s threats? The house literally falling down around her? The negative never stopped coming. The other shoe was hanging over her head, waiting to drop and knock her out.

Delilah took a deep breath, trying to calm the panic that bubbled up inside her chest. She wiped the tears from her eyes and gave herself a pep talk. She couldn't let herself fall apart. Abi was looking down from heaven, and needed her to raise her son.

Where was she going to get money for new tennis shoes for Ethan? Tennis shoes, good ones, were really expensive. His last pair cost over a hundred dollars.

As if the universe heard her, Delilah's phone buzzed with a text message from Corky. They needed her to come in for an extra shift.
